20 The current trend in the industry appears to be to use cheap, fairly efficient slow running piston compressors. Variable speed driving of these machines is problematic (and therefore unusual) due to the high fluctuating torques present in a reciprocating machine. Accurate flow control to match demand are not easily achieved, without variable speed control, resulting in less efficient operation. It has also been suggested by a bottle manufacturer, that close control of the pressure results in a higher quality bottle.
By 2010 HPC had embarked on a drive towards Lean Implementation, and one of the possible improvements identified was adapting the BOM for standard machines to a multi-level structure which reflects manufacturing and procurement processes. The team of engineers tasked with developing the BOM quickly realised that the BOMs could be standardised to suit the emerging standard design arrangement, and could even be released and controlled upfront for each of the standard frame sizes, and therefore freely available “on-demand” whenever a new standard project was sold.
