Many of the elements found in the Eldridge Street Synagogue, such as the Stars of David and horseshoe arches, can also be found in the Herter Brothers’ tenements. With the financial depression caused by the Panic of 1893 and years with negligible number of commissions, the brothers dissolved their partnership and practiced independently. Almost a century after the construction of the Eldridge Street Synagogue, the office of the eminent preservation architect Giorgio Cavaglieri, himself an Italian Jewish immigrant, was engaged to prepare the Historic Structure Report, which assessed building conditions, made recommendations, and aided the Project in its first years of raising funds and public awareness.
Two years later, the name of the merged congregation was legally changed to Khal Adas Jeshurun (Community of the People of Israel) known familiarly as the Eldridge Street Synagogue. A moment of great pride for the synagogue came in 1887 with the dedication of the congregation’s new building. The 22 the ac tive syna g ogues members had constructed the largest and most elegant Eastern European Jewish synagogue in New York. In a city then dominated by Reform synagogues such as Central Synagogue, which today is still located on Lexington Avenue at 55th Street, and an earlier version of Temple Emanu-El, whose grand edifice was then located at Fifth Avenue and East 43rd Street, the Eldridge Street Synagogue, in all its grandeur, remained almost defiantly Orthodox and decidedly Eastern European.
