Nor did they speak and write, as others have believed, in a Jewish-Greek patois. It cannot, of course fail to be perceived that there is a difference between the Greek of the New Testament and that of other contemporary writers. But this difference does not lie in distinction of dialect. The latter authors, who wrote for a cultured public, endeavoured with more or less success to imitate, as far as the living development of the Greek tongue still permitted, that epoch of the language which had been consecrated by the c1assic creations of the Peric1ean age.

2) There are, in varying degrees, Semitic characteristics in NT Greek. This is the concession of the cDeismannites'. In the words of B. "196 What kind of Semitisms are now envisioned? As we have said, there has been a movement away from classifying Semitisms in general as Aramaisms on the part of people oriented against cDeissmannism'. This, coupled with a greater readiness on the part of scholars sympathetic to DEISSMANN to see Aramaic influence has resulted in a healthy, intermediate position: a number of Aramaisms are likely, but many locutions must remain undifferentiated Semitisms,197 What is especially significant, however, is the great appreciation of the LXX on the part of all concerned.
