In 2001, FIEs contributed only around 10 percent of China’s trade surplus. That figure went up to about one-third for the years 2001 to 2004 and further to more than half for 2005 and 2006, as well as for January to October 2007. The importance of FIEs in China’s surging trade surplus is reflected in the changing composition of the product mix.
