Although a longtime supporter of efforts to contain communism in Southeast Asia, Nixon knew if elected he would need to end the American military commitment to South Vietnam because of rising domestic dissatisfaction with the war.
Presidents Kennedy and Johnson failed to assess the local nature of the conf lict between South Vietnam (RVN) and North Vietnam (DRV) as they increased the American commitment to the noncommunists. 2 From 1961 to 1963 John Kennedy increased the number of military advisers on the ground in Southeast Asia, but he resisted a full-scale military commitment. In 1965, to ensure the stability of the weak South Vietnamese government, Lyndon Johnson sent American forces to fight the war against the communists.
