In this context the company shifted its R&D function business model from a cost centre to a revenue generating model driven by innovation rather knowledge production only. The R&D function was considered as a driver for innovation with the potential to contribute to the core business of the corporation. The firm had no past experience in managing R&D outsourcing. W. Brook and A. Plugge R&D Sourcing Strategy The company adopted a selective R&D sourcing strategy. This was motivated by a corporate innovation strategy inspired by the open innovation concept that builds from the assumption that a dedicated internal R&D function should be complemented with external knowledge by specialized contract research organisations.
The sources of secondary data consist of documents describing the strategic direction, the repositioning of the internal R&D organisation and the evaluation of the implementation of the R&D sourcing strategy. The transcribed interviews and the secondary data were content analysed (Neuendorf, 2002) to identify general patterns in the data using an iterative process consisting of multiple readings of the interview documents. The goal of this process was to achieve convergence around the set of themes that emerged from the data (McDonough, 2004).
